Identify the native export and keep its structure
Check whether the package provides a native Painter brush library, category, or individual variant. Keep the accompanying files and folder structure together. If an outer download ZIP contains the native export, extract that outer ZIP according to the notes. A loose preview image is not the brush variant.
Use native libraries, categories, and variants exported from Painter 12 Update 1 or later. Your installed Painter version must also be 12 Update 1 or later; earlier Painter 12 and Service Pack 1 do not support these exports. For folder-based libraries from Painter 11 or earlier, preserve the library → category → variant structure and use the legacy instructions for your target version.
Choose the matching Brushes → Import command
In a supported Painter version, choose Brushes → Import, then Brush Library, Category, or Brush to match the native export. Select the file; for a single variant, choose its destination category when prompted. If the next dialog offers captured dab images, follow the package notes when choosing brushes, dab images, or both. If you import a variant’s captured dab, choose a destination library from the Captured Dab Library list. Use your installed version’s legacy instructions for an older folder-based library.
Check the selected library and its categories in the Brush Selector. If the import added a different library, switch to it before looking for the variant. Check the system and Painter version listed in the package notes.
Select the variant and test its intended layer setup
Select a variant in the imported library or category and try it on a spare document using the layer type and settings listed in the package. If it includes a brush sample, compare a stroke and color patch at its size and opacity. Keep the original export before editing a working variant.
If the library or variant is missing
Check the selected library, destination category, import command, and the package’s native or legacy file structure. Confirm the complete download and tested Painter version before repeating the import. Record the library or variant name, filename, system, version, and failed step.
